Are you ready to have a psychedelic and rad time? It may be well past the era where hippies started to emerge, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still around today. At one point in our lives, we’ve all wanted to know what it was like to simply be baked 99% of the time and speak out for peace, love, and happiness. With the hippie themed college party, you can live those days with your closest friends. Gather around in a circle of love and let the sounds of the Grateful Dead take you away…
Now, how you go about the set up is all dependent on how authentic you want to be. First things first, though – get plenty of weird seating; and by weird, I mean beanbag chairs, giant velvet pillows – hell, you could even just take the couch cushions and throw them on the floor. Give your even space the look and feel of just being a place of relaxation and comfort. In one spot in the space, plug in something like a lava lamp. Hell, let the entire space be lit by lava lamps, so long as there is at least one.
To accent the soft glow of lava lamps, you will want to hang up some beaded curtains around. These items are fairly easy to find, especially at any party shop, and they come in all sorts of designs and varieties. To liven up the space even more, you can find some pretty authentic tapestries online to adorn the wall space. The mix of the flowing lava, the swaying bead curtains, and the colorful wall hangings will have enough of an effect on your senses to make you feel like you’re tripping.
Now, we all know that hippies are known for their weed and acid, but we’re going to try and keep this party as legal as possible. While they’re not known for a specific type of alcohol, there is a beverage known as “Hippie Juice” that would make a perfect mixed drink for this affair. The recipe is as follows:
- 4 scoops Pink Lemonade mix
- Fresh Strawberries, sliced for garnish
- 1 cup Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka
- 1/3 cup Triple Sec
- 1/3 cup Malibu Coconut Rum
This mixture is light, refreshing, and still packs enough of a punch to know that there’s alcohol in it. It’s a dangerous drink, as you don’t realize how much you’re really drinking until the effects start to kick in.
What to Wear?
The thrift store is probably going to be your best friend when planning for this party. You want extremely colorful clothing – almost blindingly colorful. Your other option is a lot of earth tones – browns and tans. You’ll want to stick to shawls, bellbottoms, and corduroy if you want to go for something authentic and very 1970’s.
Hippie costumes are a staple at most costume shops, so if you’re not willing to go the extra mile and dig through a thrift store, you have the very convenient option of simply ordering a hippie costume online.
