Murder Mystery
By: The Costume King
The concept of the Murder Mystery has been one that people have latched on to for ages. Acting as the perfect dinner theater production, murder mysteries pit the "audience" in the midst of a fresh murder. It's an enjoyable way to get people involved and, with the right creative mind before it, could be an amazing themed college party.
Setting Up
This may be the most elaborate set up for a college party you'll ever come across. It requires plenty of thought, clever planning, and enough time to write a full on script. Your first order of business is going to be to find a reliable staff of individuals willing to participate as actors. You'll need somebody to take on the roll of the detective, several witnesses / suspects, and, the more depressing roll, the deceased.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to put your murder mystery together, and don't hesitate to follow these tips:
- Come up with a full script of the murder and the dialogue after
- Throw in some twists and create a few red herrings
- Make the clues subtle so only the keenest of minds can find / catch them
- Try not to be traditional ' stray away from the "jaded wife" who's in it for the life insurance
- Be diverse with your suspects / witnesses
- Don't let your guests know who the victim is until the murder occurs. Give them no inkling as to who's involved until necessary.
- Make your signature beverage a Bloody Mary, just for kicks
What to Wear?
The party's wear is going to be determined by several factors. First, what time period is the murder taking place? This will determine the attire for not only the law enforcement, but of your guests as well. You could go the modern route and just have everyone treat it like a formal affair, but if you want some creativity from your guests, you may want to consider maybe a 1950's setting.
Second, where is the murder taking place? While the time period will determine what mode of dress your guests will be in, determining an exact local will give them the direction they need. Are they at a dinner party or at a casual affair? Most murder mystery parties take place in more formal settings, but don't be afraid to move in the opposite direction of tradition.
